Castello dei Rampolla

The estate S. Lucia in Faulle, where the Castello dei Rampolla wine is produced, is situated on Panzano’s famed amphithreatre called Conca d’Oro. Since 1739, the di Napoli family has owned and managed the 13th-century estate situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone. The vineyards occupy 42 hectolitres in total and are predominantly calcareous with little clay and many stones. The vineyards have a south, southeast and southwest exposure. Their altitudes run from 1200 to 900 feet.

The founder of the estate, the late Alceo di Napoli Rampolla, was one of the region’s great Bordeaux varietal pioneers. From 1964, Alceo had been selling most of the grapes he grew to the Antinori family, but was soon to change his mind after falling in love with Sassicaia, the radical, Bordeaux-style wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon, a grape that was just getting its roots wet in Bolgheri’s ground. Alceo believed that the Panzano area of Chianti was particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and the critical acclaim that followed for his two Super-Tuscans, Sammarco (a predominantly Cabernet-based blend with Sangiovese first created in 1980 with Giacomo Tachis) and the Vigna d’Alceo launched in 1996 proved him right.

Today, Alceo’s son and daughter Luca and Maurizia continue to produce his handcrafted wines in cooperation with Tachis. The estate is noted for its rigorous and uncompromising viticultural practices, which emphasize high-density planting and low yields. The farm has practiced biodynamic agriculture. The grape harvest is done manually, selecting only the best grapes, in the period between September and October. The estate only uses its own grapes. In the cellar, the winemaking is done in enamelled iron and concrete vats. In addition, the fermentation proceeds with natural yeasts and no sulphur is used.  The aging is done in oak barrels and French barriques.
